About Universal Sydney
Universal is an LGBTQIA+ nightclub on the city end of Oxford Street, run by the Universal Hotels group. Downstairs is the main dancefloor, with DJs most nights, while upstairs is a more relaxed bar with a pub menu and live entertainment. Drag shows and themed parties are staples, and the late dance sessions peak on Fridays and Saturdays.
The site carries deep queer history. It opened as the Tropicana gay disco in 1978, became the Midnight Shift in 1980 and traded under that name until late 2017. Universal reopened it in September 2018, and the City of Sydney has backed a push to heritage-list the building.
