Tasmania · late-night guide

Hobart and Launceston, after dark.

Small, characterful rooms: Hobart’s big independent live venue, dive bars that trade until 3am, Salamanca’s waterfront pubs and North Hobart’s gig strip, plus Launceston’s walkable few blocks. Where to go out late in Tasmania, and how to get home.

Hobart

Hobart does late nights in small, characterful rooms – a 700-capacity live venue on Murray Street, dive bars on Elizabeth Street, waterfront pubs at Salamanca and a couple of locals’ favourites up in North Hobart.

Hobart CBD & North Hobart

Elizabeth Street and Murray Street hold most of Hobart’s later drinking – dive bars, rum bars, an izakaya open past midnight and Altar’s big live room – and Elizabeth Street carries on up to North Hobart’s tiki bar and corner pub.

Salamanca & Battery Point

The sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place and the lanes up into Battery Point mix waterfront pubs, cocktail bars and Hobart’s newest late slice joint.

Launceston

Launceston’s night is compact and walkable: a classic live-music pub, a disco-leaning social club and a few hideaway bars all within a few blocks of the CBD.

Launceston CBD

Brisbane Street and the lanes around it hold Launceston’s late options, all close enough to walk between.
