Late bar & izakaya

Bar Wa Izakaya

216–218 Elizabeth Street. Japanese bar food late – try the Bruny Island wallaby wings – and a 22-page drinks list.

About Bar Wa Izakaya

Bar Wa is a Tokyo-style izakaya on Elizabeth Street between the city and North Hobart, opened by brothers Richard and Julian after nearly 20 years working at the nearby Republic Bar. Share plates use Tasmanian produce, including pork gyoza, agedashi tofu and Bruny Island wallaby wings, with ramen at lunch.

The 22-page drinks list covers sake, highballs, umeshu, Japanese whisky and beer, and Japanese-leaning cocktails. There is an upstairs lounge with a fireplace for walk-ins, and the kitchen runs late, with drinks served past midnight every night.
