About The Baso (The Basement)

The Baso, formerly known as The Basement, is an independent live-music venue at 2 Cohen Street, Belconnen. Its website says it has supported live music since 1985, hosts all kinds of genres and some large touring acts, and promotes local talent.

The venue lists three bars, pool tables, pinball machines and food from Chompys. Hours are from 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and from 11:30am on Friday. Sunday and Monday are closed unless there is a gig, in which case it opens at doors time or 6pm, whichever is earlier. The site says it aims to close around 10pm on quieter nights, which varies with gigs.

HerCanberra's September 2026 guide describes it as an independent venue hosting some of the largest touring acts in the local scene, and the ACT Government's May 2026 guide lists it for touring acts. Gig tickets are sold through Oztix, linked from the Baso's gig guide.

Getting there

Light rail runs from Alinga Street to Dickson Interchange (five stops) and to Macarthur Avenue for Lyneham; the last service from Alinga Street is about 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and about 11:30pm on other nights. Downer and Belconnen are bus, taxi or rideshare trips (Rapid 3 and 4 serve Belconnen), so check Transport Canberra for the last service.
